A deeper dive into gut health

Exploring the fascinating world of the gut microbiome and bringing the latest research into clinical practice.
I'm delighted to share that I've recently completed my Certified Healthy Gut Practitioner training with Dr Jason Hawrelak at the Microbiome Restoration Center.
Naturopathic medicine has long recognised the importance of gut health as a foundation for overall wellbeing. What makes this such an exciting area of healthcare is how much modern research is now revealing about the extraordinary world of our gut microbiome and its influence on our health.
The fascinating world within us
Our digestive tract is home to trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, collectively known as the gut microbiome.
Far from simply helping us digest our food, these microorganisms play important roles in supporting immune function, maintaining the intestinal barrier, producing beneficial compounds and communicating with other systems throughout the body.
We now understand that the gut microbiome is connected to many aspects of health, including metabolism, inflammation and even the gut–brain axis.
It's a wonderfully complex ecosystem, and one that continues to surprise researchers.
One of the most important things we're learning is that there is no single 'perfect' microbiome. Each of us has a unique microbial community, shaped by our diet, environment, medications, lifestyle and individual health history.
90 hours of learning (and some marathon Q&A sessions!)
I have just completed an intensive course in Naturopathic and Functional Medicine Approaches to Gastrointestinal Disorders, taught by Dr Jason Hawrelak, a highly respected educator and researcher in gastrointestinal health.
The training explored evidence-informed approaches to some of the most common digestive conditions I see in clinical practice, including:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Inflammatory bowel diseases
Diverticular disease
Gastrointestinal infections and parasites
Constipation and other digestive disturbances
Gluten-related disorders and food intolerances
We also spent considerable time exploring the fascinating science of probiotics, prebiotics, dietary fibres and their therapeutic applications.
There were even some four-hour Q&A marathons! But the depth of knowledge, practical insights and opportunity to explore complex clinical cases made the experience incredibly worthwhile.
Supporting the gut, not just treating symptoms
One of the strongest messages from this training was the importance of looking beyond digestive symptoms to understand what may be contributing to them.
Bloating, abdominal discomfort, irregular bowel movements and food intolerances can have many different underlying causes. What works beautifully for one person may be entirely inappropriate for another.
And while probiotics have become almost synonymous with gut health, they're only one part of a much bigger picture.
The foods we eat, particularly the diversity of plant foods and fibres in our diet, help nourish our resident gut microbes. We should aim for 30 different plant foods in our diet each week!
Sleep, movement, stress management and certain medications can also influence this delicate ecosystem.
For some people, more targeted interventions may be appropriate, but a healthy gut isn't simply about taking more supplements, it's about creating the conditions for a thriving microbial community.
This individualised approach has always been central to my work as a naturopathic herbalist.
Still curious after all these years
After more than 25 years in clinical practice, one of the things I continue to love most about herbal medicine and naturopathy is that there's always something new to discover.
The growing body of microbiome research provides an exciting opportunity to bring together traditional herbal knowledge, nutritional medicine and contemporary science.
Completing this training has deepened my understanding of gastrointestinal health and given me additional tools to support patients experiencing digestive challenges.
And perhaps most importantly, it's reminded me once again just how interconnected the human body really is.
The more we discover about the extraordinary world within us, the more we appreciate the importance of nurturing it. 🌿
If you're experiencing ongoing digestive concerns, I offer individualised naturopathic and herbal medicine consultations, both in person in Bulli and via telehealth. My approach combines herbal medicine, nutrition, lifestyle support and current clinical research, working alongside conventional medical care where appropriate.
